Bihar Engineering University (BEU) has released the revised B.Tech 1st Semester syllabus for the 2026–2030 batch, applicable across all affiliated engineering colleges. The new curriculum organizes all B. Tech branches into three groups (A, B, and C), each with a slightly different first-semester course basket tailored to the discipline family, while still sharing a strong common core.

What’s Common Across All Three Groups
Regardless of which group a student falls into, the new syllabus keeps three anchor subjects consistent everywhere:
- Engineering Mathematics – I — matrix algebra, differential and integral calculus, and vector calculus, with identical unit breakdowns (Basic Linear Algebra, Differential Calculus, Multiple Integrals, Vector Calculus) across A, B, and C.
- Introduction to AI — a genuinely new addition to Semester-I for every branch, not just computing ones. It covers intelligent agents, search strategies, knowledge representation, reasoning under uncertainty, and an introduction to machine learning paradigms — signaling BEU’s push to make AI literacy a foundational, cross-disciplinary skill from year one.
- Programming for Problem Solving Lab — a shared C/C++ lab spanning flowcharting, arrays, pointers, structures/unions, file handling, and OOP fundamentals (classes, constructors, inheritance, polymorphism, exception handling, templates).
Group B and C also share Communication Skills and its lab, plus the Sports/Yoga/NCC/NSS credit — components absent from Group A’s basket.
Key Highlights of the Revised Curriculum
1. Outcome-Based Education (OBE) framework. Every course now maps Course Outcomes (COs) to granular Theory Session Outcomes (TSOs) and, for labs, Lab Session Outcomes (LSOs) — a shift toward measurable, session-level learning objectives rather than broad unit descriptions.
2. AI as a universal foundation course. Introduction to AI appears identically in all three groups, making Bihar one of the more assertive state universities in mandating AI exposure for civil, mechanical, and chemical engineering students alongside computing branches.
3. Group-specific engineering fundamentals.
- Group A gets Computer Fundamentals & Emerging Technologies, covering everything from CPU architecture to IoT, cybersecurity basics, and blockchain.
- Group B gets Basic Electrical Engineering, with deep coverage of AC/DC circuits, magnetic circuits, transformers, and machines.
- Group C gets Engineering Chemistry and Engineering Graphics and Design, aligned with core/civil/mechanical/chemical workflows.
4. Zero-credit constitutional literacy. “Essence of Indian Constitution” appears in Group A as a mandatory, non-credit (audit) course — reflecting AICTE’s broader mandate on constitutional values without adding to the credit load.
5. Updated reference lists. Textbook references across subjects include recent editions (2020–2025), such as Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach (Russell & Norvig, 4th Ed., 2020) and several India-authored titles published in 2023–2025.
Why This Matters for Students and Faculty
For students, this restructuring means a more uniform first-semester experience in mathematics, AI, and programming, while still receiving branch-relevant electrical/chemistry/graphics grounding early on — easing potential future branch changes or interdisciplinary electives.
For faculty, the OBE-aligned TSO/LSO mapping will require lesson planning to explicitly tie each teaching session to a measurable outcome, useful for NBA/NAAC accreditation documentation.
